- Character budget. Every hashtag eats into your caption's total character count, which competes with the words that actually give context and hook viewers.
- Algorithmic dilution. TikTok's discovery system reads hashtags as classification signals. Too many, especially unrelated ones, muddies that signal rather than strengthening it - the system reads a caption stuffed with loosely related tags as less clearly "about" any one thing.
How to use the count wisely, not just legally
Getting under five hashtags isn't the finish line - which five matters more than hitting the number. A workable split inside your five slots: one broader category tag, two to three tags specific to your exact content or niche, and (only when it's genuinely relevant) one tag riding a current trend. This counter shows your live count so you can spend your five slots deliberately instead of tacking hashtags on as an afterthought at the end of your caption.
