In controlled A/B testing on social video, adding captions has been linked to meaningfully higher view time, higher reach, and notably more shares compared to the same video without them - and separate consumer research found 80% of viewers say they're more likely to watch a video all the way through when captions are available, regardless of whether they have any hearing loss at all.
Burned-in vs. toggleable captions
TikTok supports both auto-generated captions that a viewer can toggle on or off, and "open" captions that are burned permanently into the video frame. The safer default for reach is burned-in: since so much viewing happens with sound off by default, a caption that requires a viewer to actively tap something to turn on is a caption a large share of your audience will simply never see. Accuracy actually matters here, not just presence
A garbled auto-caption can be worse than none - bad captions confuse meaning, look unpolished, and (for viewers who rely on them for comprehension, not just convenience) can make content actively harder to follow than silence would be. Always do a quick read-through pass on generated subtitles before publishing, especially for names, brand terms, or numbers, which automatic transcription tends to get wrong most often.
