Why "just compress it more" isn't free
Compression is a genuine tradeoff, not a free lunch. Whatever you upload, TikTok compresses and serves it at a maximum of 1080p resolution. If your source footage is 4K, there is no visual benefit to uploading it at full 4K file size — you're paying a compression and upload-time cost for detail the platform is going to discard regardless. Downscaling to 1080×1920 before compressing, rather than after, generally produces a cleaner result than letting TikTok's own pipeline do that downscaling for you from a much larger source file.
What actually determines file size
Three factors do almost all the work: resolution (pixel dimensions), bitrate (how much data is used per second of video), and length. Of the three, bitrate is where compression tools do their heaviest lifting — dropping bitrate on a 1080×1920, 30fps clip can cut file size dramatically while resolution and frame rate stay untouched, which is usually the better tradeoff than shrinking the frame itself.
MP4 with H.264 is the safe target
The most broadly compatible and TikTok-friendly export combination is MP4 (or MOV) video wrapped with H.264 video encoding and AAC audio — this pairing balances quality against file size better than most alternatives and avoids re-encoding surprises on TikTok's end after upload.
