Design the frame that convinces someone to tap play - or to visit your profile in the first place. TikTok calls it a "cover," but it functions exactly like a thumbnail everywhere else on the internet: the still image representing your video before anyone commits to watching it.
Two places, two different crops
This is the detail most creators miss entirely: your thumbnail is displayed in two different shapes depending on where it's seen.
- The main feed / For You page: shows your full 9:16, 1080x1920 cover, uncropped.
- Your profile grid: crops that same image down to roughly a 3:4 rectangle, trimming an estimated 15% off both the top and the bottom.
Design only for the full-screen feed version, and your thumbnail can look perfect there and lose its headline text or a face the moment someone visits your profile grid. The fix is straightforward: keep anything essential - text, faces, logos - inside the vertical center 70% or so of the frame, since that's the zone that survives both crops.
The overlay you're competing with
TikTok automatically lays your caption's first line over the bottom portion of your cover - roughly the bottom 250-270 pixels, based on current interface behavior. Put your own headline text down there and TikTok's own overlay will sit directly on top of it, cancelling out whatever you designed. Keep the bottom margin clear and put your text in the middle of the frame instead.
What actually earns the tap
A cover that's just a random paused frame from mid-motion - mouth open mid-word, an awkward blink - rarely performs as well as one that was deliberately composed. Patterns that consistently do better: a clear before/after split for transformation-style content, bold high-contrast text stating the specific payoff ("3 mistakes killing your reach" beats a vague title), or a genuinely expressive, in-focus face rather than a blurred action shot. Consistency across your whole grid matters too - a profile where every thumbnail follows a similar visual template reads as more professional and pulls more clicks into your back catalog.
Export settings that hold up
1080x1920 pixels, JPEG or PNG. Anything narrower than 1080px wide will look visibly soft on a modern phone screen, especially once someone taps into the full-screen feed view where it's displayed at full size, not shrunk down in a grid.
