Why speed changes read as more than a technical effect
On TikTok specifically, speed isn't just a stylistic choice — it's become a recognizable content language of its own. Slow motion at a reveal or punchline moment signals "pay attention to this exact frame." Sped-up footage compresses a longer process (a recipe, a transformation, a commute) into a runtime that holds attention. A huge share of trend-based content — a specific transition style, a dance breakdown, a comedic timing bit — depends on speed changes lining up precisely with a beat in the audio, which is much easier to nail with frame-accurate control than by eyeballing it inside a quick in-app slider.
The technical tradeoff: speed vs. smoothness
Speeding footage up simply plays more original frames per second of output — smooth up to a point, though very fast speed-ups on footage with a lot of motion can start to look choppy, since motion blur that looked natural at normal speed reads as smeared when compressed into less time. Slowing footage down is the harder technical case: your source footage was captured at a fixed frame rate (commonly 30fps), and slowing it down means the software has to either repeat existing frames or synthetically generate new ones in between (frame interpolation) to keep motion looking smooth rather than stuttery. Genuinely smooth slow motion — the kind seen in dedicated "slo-mo" phone camera modes — actually requires footage captured at a higher frame rate to begin with (60fps, 120fps); slowing down standard 30fps footage after the fact will show some judder no matter how good the software is.
What happens to audio when you change speed
Speed changes shift pitch by default unless the tool specifically compensates for it — sped-up audio sounds higher and squeakier, slowed-down audio sounds lower and draggier, both usually unwanted side effects rather than an intentional style choice. This tool preserves original pitch through the speed change unless you deliberately want the pitch-shifted effect, which is itself a recognizable comedic or dramatic device on TikTok in its own right.
