It's a circle almost everywhere it appears
TikTok displays your profile picture inside a circular mask, which means the four corners of whatever square image you upload get cut away automatically. That sounds obvious until you actually design something with a logo or text that runs close to the edges — corner content just disappears.
Where that circle actually shows up, and how small it gets:
- Comment threads and the Following feed: roughly 32-40px — genuinely tiny, barely more than a colored dot.
- For You Page overlay: around 80px.
- Your profile page: the largest it appears, around 120px.
Given how small most placements are, anything intricate — fine text, detailed illustration, busy backgrounds — simply won't read. What survives at 32px is bold, high-contrast, and centered: a clear face, a simple logo mark, a solid color block with one strong shape.
The size to actually export at
Upload at 200×200 pixels minimum, though 400×400 or even 1000×1000 is a better call if you want it to stay sharp on high-resolution phone screens rather than looking soft when someone zooms into your profile. TikTok will accept smaller files, but there's no upside to cutting it close to the minimum.
Designing for the crop, not against it
The single most common mistake: designing a square image and only checking it looks good as a square. Always preview inside a circle before finalizing — a logo that looks balanced in a square frame can look lopsided or clipped the moment the corners disappear. Keep your main subject or mark centered with breathing room on all sides, not touching any edge.
