What a QR code actually is, briefly
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode — a grid of black and white squares that encodes data, originally developed in Japan in 1994 by the automotive supplier Denso Wave to track parts on factory assembly lines. It became a global standard specifically because it can hold far more information than a traditional one-dimensional barcode, and because it's error-correcting: a modern QR reader can still decode it even if a meaningful chunk of the code is smudged, torn, or partially covered.
Where a TikTok QR code actually earns its space
QR codes work best when someone already has their phone out and a reason to scan, not as a generic decoration. That means: a physical storefront window, a printed event flyer, the bottom of a receipt, a conference booth banner, or a slide in a presentation where you want the audience to follow you without anyone typing a handle into their phone by hand. They tend to underperform in places where scanning is inconvenient — a billboard someone's driving past, for instance, isn't a realistic scan opportunity.
A few things that make or break a printed QR code
Size and distance matter together. A code meant to be scanned from a few feet away (a poster) needs to be noticeably larger than one scanned up close (a business card). As a rough guide, a QR code should be roughly one-tenth the expected scanning distance.
Contrast is not optional. Low-contrast color combinations (light gray on white, pastel on pastel) frequently fail to scan even if they look fine to the human eye — stick to genuinely dark modules on a genuinely light background.
Leave a quiet zone. A clear margin of blank space around the code isn't wasted space — scanners use it to detect where the code starts and ends, and a code crammed right up against text or an edge can fail to scan reliably.
